The Good Day Kansas Team made it to Lindsborg, KS for today’s Secret Spots segment, but it felt like they travelled all the way to Sweden! Lindsborg, KS also respectfully known as “Little Sweden” maintains the traditions of the Swedish immigrants that founded the quaint town. Jillian met Shirley and Gary inside Hemslojd, the leading Swedish store in the U.S. specializing in Swedish imports and Scandinavian gifts of all types. “Hemslöjd” (pronounced hem-sloyd) is Swedish for handicraft. Throughout Sweden you’ll find small Hemslöjd shops where all sorts of Swedish crafts are made and sold. Jillian had the chance to hear from Shirley and Gary about the process of making the Dala horse and for the impact the Swedish traditions have on the town of Lindsborg, KS. Shirley and Gary handcraft and paint the Dala Horses and other Scandinavian gifts inside the workshop located inside the gift shop. They handmade Swedish Dala horses, Dala Cats, and Dala Dotsons, they also have an array of Swedish gifts such as lingonberries, Swedish cookies, Scandinavian jewelry, items for the Scandinavian home and kitchen, or traditional Swedish souvenirs in the gift shop.
We give a big thanks to Shirley for making us our own Good Day Kansas Dala horse!
