Clara Whitaker — remember that name. Clara is a four time state champion in girls tennis boasting a 125 – 5 record across her four years. Five losses in four years…do the math; that is INCREDIBLE. There are many other accolades earned by this phenomenal female athlete over the course of her four years and chances are if you are in or near Wichita you’re already aware of them.
Upon meeting Clara and hearing her thoughts on her tennis career and genuine excitement for her new journey beginning at WSU it was crystal clear: Clara is a unique balance of a fierce competitor and focused student athlete. Clara started classes this summer to get a head start on her hefty academic load. She is pursing nothing short of greatness this year both on the tennis court and in the classroom.
Clara shared her time with me and was a delight, sharing her excitement for joining the Shockers as a Freshman for WSU Women’s Tennis this fall. Clara is bright eyed and bushy tailed but don’t let that fool you – she is focused. All summer she has been training, competing in tournaments all while attending classes and planning her move into the dorms to fully experience college life.
Clara just received the title of Girls Tennis player of the Year from USA Today High School Sports Awards and although is proud of her accomplishments is as humble as they come. She is a gem. Keep an eye out for what she will do in the future for the women’s tennis team at WSU
