I have driven past Park City BMX multiple times since I have moved to Wichita and I never really knew what happened at the track. I finally decided to check it out and had the chance to meet some of the team of volunteers that make it come to life with races, practices, lessons, private parties, and more. Jamie and Keith both shared some of their favorites memories of nights out at the track and also shared insight into the hard work required to make this venue a huge part of the BMX community in Kansas.
Keith joined me for an interview and shared what happens on a daily basis. It looks like a like bare track most hours of the day but comes to life at night when the riders and crowds come out to enjoy the extreme sport. Park City BMX has a super-cross style track. The track is built for novice to pro riders of all ages. It also has a pro section on the second and third straights with a jump-over berm. The Pro section jumps are 1216′ and the Armature section jumps are 1151′. The starting hill where we stood is approx. 28′ tall and has the starting gate, a Get-A-Gate with Cartessa electronics running random cadence.
The crowds come out in full force and enjoy the exciting races on a weekly basis. There are concession’s available and seating for you to see every racer fly over ever jump. I was blown away by the age range of riders! There are boys and girls as young as 3 years old and men and women over 70 yers old who ride! I had such a great time learning and giving it my best shot. I highly recommend you take a ride, BMX style out at the track.
This community of volunteers riders and fans were so gracious and accommodating when we came in for a visit. We had a blast and feel so lucky to have met this unique community. Head out to Park City BMX, the USA BMX affiliated track and have yourself a ball! I did! Visit their website or Facebook Page for info on classes or races!
