During the KSN Summer Road Trip we had the chance to spend time in Lucas. I would say the most notable attractions in Lucas are the Arts…including one incredibly unique place, The Garden of Eden. Director Lynn Schneider was so happy to share her knowledge and passion for Lucas and The Garden of Eden with us. She told the whole story about the creator, Samuel Parry Dinsmoor. A Civil War Veteran, Dinsmore retired at 62 years old built house first as tourist attraction. No two doors or two windows are the same. They lived in the house, and had tours through the main level. It all started with Adam and Eve statues with a clear biblical influence, then evolved into showcasing the big businesses taking advantage of the working man; most sculptures display the big business chasing after the man. There is a diorama toward the front consisting of a woman chasing a soldier, solider shooting an Indian, Indian shooting dog, the dog is after fox, the fox is chasing the bird, the bird is after the worm which is trying to eat the tree. This is a clear story of the Social Darwinism Theory. What an interesting story and visually represented in an amazing way. The details on the sculpture are so unique. They are all made out of concrete. Dinsmoor was a revolutionary, he had the first electrical lighting in the town. The electric generator under the porch lit up the sculptures. Back in the day the train station was down the street, so the sculpture being lit up brought crowds. The civil war veteran is also entombed here. This is the most unique house of the living and the dead. Make sure to visit their website at www.lucaskansas.com
