Police said they made an arrest in the city’s latest homicide. It happened Sunday night in the 4400 block of South Broadway outside of the CitiHost Motel.
Police said the victim, identified as Justin Gaston, was found injured with a gunshot wound. A witness rendered aid to Gaston before he was pronounced by EMS.
The suspect, identified by police as 31-year-old Christopher Kemmerly, was arrested Monday in the 700 block of North Westridge. He is facing charges of first-degree murder and battery.
Police said during the investigation, they learned the suspect, the victim and another woman were in a stolen vehicle when an argument occurred.
“That is why they pulled into the parking lot down there. The argument started because of drugs,” said Capt. Brent Allred, Wichita Police Department.
The suspect then shot the victim after he got out of the vehicle.
The stolen vehicle was found on fire at another location about an hour and half later on West Street.
The owner of the stolen vehicle led police to arrest the suspect.
Police said the shooting is the third homicide this year.
The woman inside the vehicle has not been arrested.
Kemmerly was convicted of mutliple crimes in Butler County back in 2012. His sentence ended in November 2018.
