A father has been arrested and charged in September’s shooting death of his 1-year-old daughter in Lawrence.

The Douglas County District Attorney’s Office reports 32-year-old Chance M. Smith was taken into custody for the September 22 incident on a $10,000 bond, and charged with one felony count of involuntary manslaughter and two felony counts of aggravated endangering a child.

The state statute on involuntary manslaughter describes it as the killing of a human being “committed recklessly.” However, authorities have not released details on the shooting such as whether the father or daughter was handling the gun when it fired.

The daughter, Autumn Grace Smith, died at the scene of the shooting in the Smith family’s home.
