Darren L. Hutcherson

Wichita police arrested a 53-year-old man after he allegedly tried to stab an officer with a butter knife.

It happened around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday in the 2800 block of North Hillside at the Union Rescue Mission.

Police said they went to the location to arrest a man, identified on booking sheets as Darren L. Hutcherson, with an active warrant from the Kansas Department of Corrections.

“As officers approached the suspect, the suspect did grab a butter knife from the table nearby and stabbed the officer in the chest just below his neck area,” said officer Paul Cruz, Wichita Police Department.

The suspect dropped the knife and ran. After a short pursuit, he was arrested.

The knife did not penetrate the officer’s vest. The officer wasn’t injured.

Hutcherson is in the Sedgwick County Jail. Police said he was booked for attempted murder of an officer, aggravated assault, resist arrest, and a department of corrections warrant.
