A Wichita mother and her boyfriend have been charged with first-degree murder in the death of the woman’s 2-year-old son Anthony Bunn.
Elizabeth Woolheater, 22, and Lucas Diel, 25, were charged in court Wednesday.
The boy was found unresponsive in a Wichita home on Friday. He suffered injuries to his neck and head. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died from those injuries.
Both Woolheater and Diel are being held in the Sedgwick County Jail on a $250,000 bond each. The judge said if they do make bail, they are not to have contact with anyone under the age of 18.
The child’s grandparents were also in court, and they had their own message to share.
“Children are being found dead and beaten all the time. We just need to focus on getting justice for that and getting an end to this epidemic,” said Zachary Woolheater, Anthony Bunn’s grandfather. “That’s my biggest concern right now.”
Both Elizabeth Woolheater and Lucas Diel are expected back in court on May 23 at 9:a.m.
