Police: Father arrested after son dies due to roughhousing

Wichita police said a baby boy is dead after being abused.

On Tuesday morning, a mother and father took the baby to St. Joseph Hospital. The baby wasn’t breathing and died shortly after. Homicide and the Exploited and Missing Child Unit detectives responded to the hospital.

Both the mother and father were interviewed.

“It was learned that the father had told hospital staff that he was shadowboxing and roughhousing with the child. The child had stopped breathing,” said Lt. Todd Ojile, Wichita Police Department.

The father, 28-year-old Dorl Callus Gwyn, was arrested on suspicion of murder in the first-degree and abuse of a child. The mother wasn’t arrested.

“Late yesterday afternoon, the coroner’s office began the autopsy on the child. We learned the child had severe internal injuries,” added Lt. Ojile.

It is the 13th homicide in the city this year.

Police plan to present their case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office tomorrow.

Police said the couple have three other children. Two are with grandparents. One is with the mother.
