Wichita police made an arrest in a 46-year-old man’s death in northeast Wichita. It happened early Sunday in the 2300 block of North Chautauqua.
At around 2 a.m., officers were contacted outside the Patrol North Police Station by a 45-year-old male who stated a 46-year-old male was injured at a home on Chautauqua and needed help.
Officers arrived and found the victim with gunshot wounds to his upper body. The victim, identified as Desmond Winesberry, was pronounced dead on the scene.
Desmond’s family released this statement:
” He would never hurt anyone. We know someone around here knows more about what happened that night. Desmond had 5 children and even more grandchildren; he loved them all. He was a good person and we want to know what happened here.”
On Monday, police arrested 31-year-old Damien D. Manuel on suspicion of first-degree intentional murder.
Police said they are still investigating.
“There is another individual we are working to contact at this time,” said officer Charley Davidson, Wichita Police Department.
The death marks the 37th homicide in Wichita this year, and those that live in the area told KSN they are shocked that it happened in their neighborhood.
“I came out on my porch and seen all the flashing; the street lights were lit up,” explained Deriek Thomas who lives right next door to were the homicide happened. “Older people moved on and the new generation is moving in, and they haven’t been raised in this neighborhood.”
Thomas told KSN that he has lived in his home for over 20 years.
“Nowadays, I watch my surroundings,” said Thomas. “That house next door has been a lot of trouble.”
