Authorities arrest suspect in southeast Kansas homicide

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. (KSNW) – Authorities made an arrest in a fatal shooting in the town of Independence.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says 19-year-old Kimberly Meeks, of Coffeyville, was shot and killed Saturday evening while walking along Main Street around 6 p.m.

Authorities on Sunday arrested 18-year-old Benjamin J. Mason on suspicion of first-degree murder. Mason was booked into the Montgomery County Jail.

The Montgomery County Attorney is expected to prosecute the case. The investigation is ongoing.

Independence has about 9,500 residents and it is located about 175 miles southwest of Kansas City, Kansas.
