Suspect involved in standoff with police after firing shots into air

Wichita police said a suspect involved in a standoff fired shots into the air before being arrested.

It happened Sunday night. Officers responded to a shots fired call in the 600 block of North Seneca. 

When they arrived, they heard additional shots fired south and west of the location. 

Police located the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Sir Sumpter, at a home in the 700 block of West Maple. 

During the standoff, police said several adults and children were able to exit the home. 

Police said Sumpter was taken into custody and a stolen gun was located in the back yard. 

According to jail records, Sumpter was arrested on suspicion of criminal discharge of a firearm, possession of stolen property, interference with law enforcement and criminal threat.
