A violent robbery attempt in broad daylight was captured on surveillance video. It happened Friday in Houston.
A woman had just withdrawn $75,000 in cash when two men tried to steal her purse.
But, she fought back, and the whole thing was caught on camera.
In the startling surveillance video, a crook races up to a woman outside a Valero in Houston. He goes straight for her purse.
In it, investigators say, is $75,000. She just came back from the bank.
“We see a lot of negative things in law enforcement. This is the reason we wear the badge. This is the reason we get up every day and fight the good fight. And many of the first responders out here – not only in Precinct Four but in the city and in the county and other jurisdictions – this is why we police,” said Constable Mark Herman, Harris County Precinct Four. “We want — I mean, I will not rest tonight until we get that guy off the streets.”
The woman is seen in the video fighting back, and she doesn’t budge. Her husband, who is inside operating their check cashing business, runs out to help.
The back-and-forth ensues until another suspect pulls up.
“I would not encourage to do what she did … for the mere fact that money can be replaced; your life can’t be. But she was resilient,” said Constable Herman. “She fought, she believed in what she was doing, they were tenacious and they did not get up. This could’ve had a different outcome.”
What happens shortly later is hard to watch. One of the robbers backs his car over the couple. But, she is still hanging on to the money.
A Precinct Four deputy witnessed the attack while on patrol. He arrested the man in red underwear, now identified as 31-year-old Davis Mitchell.
The man in the white boxers took off.
“If anyone knows his identity, just call us. Give us a name and we’ll do the rest,” said Constable Herman. “We want to get him, because of his violent tendencies.”
Police are still looking for the man in the white briefs, along with two other suspects they believe were involved.
The man has been released from the hospital but his wife is still there in critical condition. She is expected to recover.
Police say the robbers did not make off with all the money.
