A 19-year-old man was booked into jail Sunday for suspicion of animal cruelty that resulted in the death of a dog.

Wichita police officer Heather Frazier tells KSN a dog was killed Sunday morning in the 3300 block of North Wild Rose after getting out of its yard. Frazier said a man who was driving nearby got out of his car and began beating the small, white dog. The dog died from injuries sustained during the beating.

Police said 19-year-old Cole Carter was booked on suspicion of animal cruelty and carrying a concealed weapon.

Family statement:

Cole is from a family that loves dogs. We feel horrible for the family and their pet involved here. Cole does suffer from some mental health issues and we continue to get help for him.
