Two officer-involved shootings early Thursday morning in Topeka have prompted a KBI investigation.
The Topeka Police Department requested the KBI conduct an investigation into the shootings around 10 a.m. Thursday.
The suspect was involved in two officer-involved shootings, however he is believed to be injured in the second shooting.
One shooting took place around 3 a.m. at SW 32nd St. and SW MacVicar Avenue. While officers were on the scene investigating that shooting, a man matching the suspect’s description appeared at the scene.
Officers attempted to question the man but he ran away. Police followed him to an area nearby Jardine Elementary and Middle School property.
Gunfire was exchanged as officers chased the man. That incident happened west of the intersection of SW MacVicar Ave. and SW Briarwood Plaza.
The suspect was shot multiple times and officers were able to secure the man’s gun.
No police officers were injured during the shooting.
The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital for surgery. Authorities say he is expected to recover.
He has been identified as 23-year-old Trevon L. Brown of Topeka.
The KBI will complete a thorough and independent investigation into this incident. Once completed, the findings will be turned over to the Shawnee County District Attorney for review.
The investigation is ongoing. No further information will be released at this time.
