DCCC board dismisses faculty concerns

DODGE CITY, Kan. (KSNW) — The Dodge City Community College’s Board of Trustees has said it will not terminate the college’s president and vice president.

This decision comes after the faculty coalition expressed their frustrations and issued a no confidence vote last month, against the president and vice president.

“I know that the board is showing loyalty to the president,” said Sue Hammond, the faculty coalition president, “but I think it also owes loyalty first to the students, it owes loyalty to the residents of Ford County, and it does owe some loyalty to the faculty.”

The board says it did review the list of grievances.

“The administrative team went back to check on each allegation and get the facts,” said Morris Reeves, the board chair, “and quite frankly a lot of the assumptions, and that’s what they were, assumptions, made by the faculty coalition, were simply not true.”

The board released an 11-page document refuting every grievance from the faculty, including concerns over closing classes, not hiring enough faculty, and other management decisions.

“Doctor Nolte and the administrative team need to open lines of communication with the faculty and I think we’re moving in that direction,” said Reeves.

President Nolte has been meeting with small groups of faculty for the past month to discuss concerns.

“I think it’ll take a while,” said Reeves about rebuilding trust between the president and faculty members. “I think by the time the school year ends this year, we’ll be moving forward in unison.”

“One doesn’t always like everyone one works with,” said Hammond, “but one can have a working relationship, and that is something that can happen.”

A few months ago, the board of trustees extended President Nolte’s contract through 2019.
