Grandparents of kidnapped kids speak out about horrific incident

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – It’s been an emotional few days for Melissa Gifford’s family.

She and her three children were abducted late Monday night.

Police found the four safe Tuesday morning at a west side hotel.

Gifford’s parents sat down exclusively with KSN and, recounted the horrific reality they had to face when they found out about the kidnapping.

The Gifford’s say if it weren’t for local law enforcement, they might not have their family together this holiday season.

“I was thinking the worst,” stated Rick Gifford, the victim’s father.

Three days later and the events are still hard to talk about for Rick, and his wife Denise.

“I would have never thought this would have happened,” recalled Rick.

He was in Boston the night his 30-year-old daughter Melissa and her three young kids were abducted at gunpoint from their home.

“The worst always comes to mind and you always pray for the best,” Rick said.

Denise was at home in Derby, sleeping, when she received a call she never expected.

“I’m thinking okay, they’re joking around until I got to the TV and found the TV, because we have that where the amber alert comes on our phone and there was nothing,” explained Denise.

There was a tremendous sense of relief, though, when authorities told them, Melissa , Aiden, Madison and Grayson were found unharmed at a west side hotel.

“The next thing was just wanting to see them, so that I know for sure that they were okay,” said Denise.

The Gifford’s say Melissa and the kids are recovering from their ordeal. The kids are back in school but, Melissa is having a difficult time coping with the kidnapping.

“She doesn’t want to talk about it . She just wants to get herself together,” said her dad.

The Giffords say this Christmas will be special because, they are so thankful for getting their family back safe.

“We just thank God every day that it came out like this. And, that we’re all going to be together as a family. We didn’t have to do anything else,” stated Denise.

Wichita police made five arrests in the case but both of the Giffords say they don’t know any of the suspects.

No word on when they’ll have their first appearance in court.
