WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A driver’s licence is a golden ticket for getting where you want to go.
So what do you do when it gets taken away? KSN talked to those who came out to Atwater Center to find out if they’re qualified to reinstate their licenses.
“I came out today out of desperation. My daughter was diagnosed with cancer last December,” said Amber Williams.
Williams is a single mom, struggling to get her 7-year-old daughter to chemo therapy, without a license.
“When your child is sick and something like that happens, you wake up and it’s time to start fixing things,” Williams said.
So she trying to get a fresh start, by coming out to Atwater Neighborhood Resource Center hoping to qualify for a legal, restricted license. She was one of the hundreds who packed Atwater Center. Representative Gail Finney and Senator Oletha Faust-Goudeau pushed a bill in 2009 to help those who suffered from a suspended drivers license.
“Afterwards, we kind of followed it to see how many people throughout the state of Kansas who were benefiting from this legislation,” Faust-Goudeau said.
In the state of Kansas, more than 4,000 qualified and in Wichita, more than 2,000 qualified. Saturday, legislatures teamed up with Kansas Department of Revenue to help those wondering if they qualified.
“We’re accepting reinstatement fees and just providing that complete record information and walking customers through the steps that are required. It’s important because sometimes it can be a scary thing,” said Jessica Ross, Kansas Department of Revenue drivers solution manager.
But some weren’t able to get their license reinstated Saturday. They have to wait a couple of days, depending on their specific circumstances.
“I appreciate the people that came down today from Topeka that are trying to help us work it out, but I just feel like I’m defeated at this point,” said Summer Jackson.
It’s a change legislatures have notice and hope to make a change in the next legislative session. Legislatures say the turnout was so big Saturday, they had to turn people away. They do plan to hold another event like this in the future, in possibly, a larger location.
If you have a suspended license, here are some steps you can take. Stop by your local DMV and drop off your suspension documents. File a proof of insurance form. If asked, retake the driver’s test and pay a reinstatement fee. Keep in mind, reinstatement requirements vary depending on why your license was suspended.
