2 killed following crash in Atchison County

Two people are dead and one person was injured following a crash in northeast Kansas.

The wreck occurred around 5 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. 59 south of Atchison, according to Kansas Highway Patrol.

Elaine L. Drennon, 55, of Atchison, was northbound on U.S. 59 in a 1997 Mercury Cougar when she crossed the center line and struck a semi head on in the southbound lanes.

Drennon and a 54-year-old passenger identified as Karen Sue Keil, of Kansas City, Missouri, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Drennon was wearing a seat belt, however Keil was not, according to KHP.

The 48-year-old male driver of the semi was taken to a hospital with injuries. He was wearing a seat belt, according to KHP.
