TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNW) – Washburn football players Dwane Simmons and Corey Ballentine were both victims in an off-campus shooting in Topeka early Sunday morning.
Simmons was killed in the shooting. Ballentine, who was selected by the New York Giants in the NFL draft, is expected to make a full recovery.
A scheduled press conference with Ballentine has been postponed until further notice.
Simmons is from Lee Summit, Mo. and majored in mass media. Washburn head football coach Craig Schurig said in a statement that Simmons death is heartbreaking.
“Dwane is one of the most energetic and well-liked players I have ever coached at Washburn,” Schurig said. “Dwane’s infectious smile and love for football and his teammates was truly inspirational. Our prayers of healing go out to his family, his parents Navarro and Yasmine Simmons and Chaquilla Williams.”
