SMITH COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) - A teenager is in unknown condition after a trooper-involved shooting in Smith County.
Per a press release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, a 15-year-old boy is accused of attempted murder of a 66-year-old woman.
According to the statement, at around 10:20 Saturday morning, Smith County Sheriff's deputies responded to a home in the 10000 block of O Road in Smith Center. They found a 66-year-old woman who reported being restrained, beaten and strangled. She was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.
Authorities say the suspected teen fled on horseback and armed with a gun. Kansas Highway Patrol troopers and Smith County Sheriff's deputies spent "a few hours" trying to take him into custody. At 2:20 p.m., the teen began shooting at troopers. In response, troopers shot the boy.
Officials say they provided medical assistance to the boy until he was taken to a local hospital by EMS. He was then taken to a hospital in Kearney, Nebraska, by helicopter, where he had surgery for his wounds. His condition is not known at this time.
Investigators say they will not release the name of the suspect because he is a minor.
No law enforcement officers were injured in the shooting.
