Families are busy preparing for back to school. It includes buying school supplies and maybe even new clothes.
One Wichita business is looking to help out by offering the kiddos something some of us take for granted a haircut.
“When you go to school with a fresh haircut, it’s starting you off on the right foot,” said Nelson Tovar, Prime Time Barbershop owner.
As a barber and a father, Tovar knows a fresh cut on the first day of school can make a huge impact on kids.
“We gotta send them out clean. We gotta make sure they’re excited for the school year to start.”
And with a pair of clippers in hand, that is exactly what he and the Prime Time barbers plan to do.
This Sunday, the barbershop is set to host a back to school event giving out free haircuts and backpacks to students.
It’s a way to use their talents to give back to their community but also a way to help parents out during an already stressful time.
“They come in every weekend with their kids, families to get their haircut so we feel like we owe it to them.”
This is the shop’s second year hosting the event, and Tovar expects a bigger turnout than last.
During last year’s event, there was a line out the door and around the corner. With only eight barbers at the time, they gave out more than 200 haircuts. But this year, with 12 barbers on hand, Tovar is hoping to give out a 100 more.
“If there’s kids probably still out there waiting, we’re going to go ahead and stay later and cut them.”
It’s going to be a long day for the shop. But as soon as that neck strip and cape come off, seeing the smiles on the kiddos’ faces the barbers will know they’ve made a difference.
“I never thought we’d be in a position to give back like this. Now that we are, definitely going to take advantage of it.”
The free haircuts and backpacks are available to all students in kindergarten through high shool.
The event lasts from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Prime Time barbershop located 725 West 13th Street North.
