The weather is great, people are looking for reasons to be outside and one local group is making that even easier. Saturday KSN joined dozens of #BikeWalkWichita volunteers, to learn about their mission to serve the community
“I love volunteering here,” said director, Kim Neufeld. “It’s just so awesome to see how you can help people and empower them and really change their everyday life.”
Neufeld is talking about providing free bikes to kids, the homeless community and even women coming out of rehab. She is joined by dozens of other volunteers who are also passionate about the mission.
“I volunteer because this is one thing I know how to do because I used to race bicycles as a kid,” said volunteer, Marco Giorgi. “It’s a good way to give back to people in the community who maybe can’t afford bicycles or don’t have them easily available to them.”
Giorgi told KSN he just started volunteering last month but he’s met people who have been doing it for years. He adds that giving people the freedom to get around town is priceless.
“Bikes are a lot faster than walking and a lot easier,” he explained. “You can get around pretty easy on a bike and if you have one it opens up a lot of opportunities to get to different jobs faster and just get some exercise and be able to have some freedom.”
May is National Bike Month and Bike Walk Wichita has partnered with Black Girls Do Bike for Wichita events this year. If you know anyone that is in need of a bike or if you would like to volunteer with the group, you can visit their FaceBook Page.
