KBI investigating Norton County homicide, suspect in custody in Missouri

Kansas

NORTON, Kan. (KSNW) – Authorities say the suspect in Sunday’s murder investigation in Norton County has been taken into custody in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Cape Girardeau police, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Norton County Sheriff’s Office tell KSN News that 42-year-old Damien Shields was booked into Cape Girardeau County Jail on Monday after being released from a local hospital. He was hospitalized for injuries that appeared to be self-inflicted.

Authorities have accused Damien of murdering his wife, 38-year-old Lori Shields.

“It’s kind of surreal because you don’t expect anything like that to occur around here,” said Ethan Ross, Norton resident.

The Norton County Sheriff’s Office requested KBI assistance at approximately 3:50 p.m. Sunday to Lori’s home. They found her dead.

Lori was a secretary at Eisenhower Elementary School in Norton.

“Lori was a very pleasant invidual, very charasmatic,” Ross said. “Her personality spoke volumes.”

“It’s just so sad she has three kids,” said Kayle Andrews, Norton resident.

Norton canceled classes Monday due to the death of Lori. The district released the following statement:

Norton USD 211 is mourning the loss of Lori Shields. Lori was a secretary at Eisenhower Elementary School and she touched the lives of students and staff in so many positive ways. We are thinking of her children and other family members during this difficult time.
