Retired Wichita Bishop Eugene J. Gerber has died.

Father David J. Lies made the announcement on Saturday afternoon.

According to Lies, Gerber was being hospitalized after suffering a heart attack earlier in the week. Gerber “was surrounded by family when he passed away.”

Gerber passed away at 11:15 a.m. Saturday. He was 87 years old.

“We give thanks to God for the blessing that his life and his ministry as Shepherd of the Church have brought so many of us,” said Father Lies in a statement. “With Christian hope we entrust Bishop to the care of our heavenly Father and pray that he is welcomed with the words, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.'”

Details about Gerber’s funeral will be announced at a later date.

Bishop Gerber served as the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Wichita. He served from 1983 to 2001.
