1989 WSU baseball team met former President George HW Bush at White House

Local

Former President George H.W. Bush holds a special place in the hearts of the 1989 Wichita State baseball team members.

The team got to visit him at the White House – after they won the College World Series.

Their pitching coach says he has fond memories of the day – and how warmly the president and first lady treated everyone.

“If you were in a normal setting, like say at Botanica or something, you would have thought, OK, these are really nice down-to-earth people, but when you’re in the Rose Garden it’s obviously a bit more of a formal setting, but no, the warmth they gave us and all the people that surrounded them was really off the chart,” said Brent Kemnitz, pitching coach, 1989 WSU baseball team.

Kemnitz says every time the team reunites, they always remember the visit with smiles.
