One person killed, one injured in crash on Highway 50 in Newton

NEWTON, Kan. (KSNW) - One person was killed and another was injured in an accident Monday afternoon in Newton. 

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports the crash took place on westbound US Highway 50 at mile marker 270. That's about 500 feet west of S. Meridian Road.

The KHP crash report said a 2014 Chevrolet passenger car was eastbound on US 50 when it crossed the centerline and struck a 2000 Freightliner tractor-trailer that was traveling westbound. The report said the passenger car rolled over and came to rest facing north in the eastbound lane.

The 67-year-old driver of the passenger car, Orville A. Schmidt of Newton, was taken to Via Christi St. Francis hospital where he was pronounced dead. Seventy-five-year-old Nancy A. Schmidt, a passenger in the car, was injured and also taken to Via Christi St. Francis in critical condition.

The 65-year-old driver of the semi was not injured.
