SHARON SPRINGS, Kan. (KSNW) – Five people were hurt in an oil field explosion Monday morning eight miles south of Sharon Springs.

Fire crews from Sharon Springs, Weskan, and Wallace all responded to the fire and were able to put it out quickly.

Two people were critically injured and taken to a Denver hospital.

Three others were taken to area hospitals.

“They said they were changing the pipe out at a joint where they add-on to a point and had some gas leaking out of it. They were changing heads and getting ready to screw the other piece on when the explosion occurred,” said Chief Jay Sharp, Wallace County Fire Department.

The site is owned by Murfin Drilling Company out of Wichita. KSN reached out to the company, but never heard back.
