Final Friday in Wichita is a time for artists to showcase their work to buyers sipping on wine and cocktails. One Wichita artist will be serving milk and cookies instead, mostly because his 21st birthday is 16 years away.
Five-year-old Davis Whitney is a kindergartner at Hyde Elementary School with a passion for art. His favorite thing to draw is monsters.
“It’s just like the first thing that pops up in my mind,” Davis said of his process.
Parents Kenneth and Jennifer Whitney say sometimes at bedtime, Davis will have a drawing in his mind he has to put to paper before he can go to sleep.
“He is a great student and he’s very creative. He does a lot of hard work and takes his time to make all the details perfect,” teacher Ashley Coltrain said.
The public has a chance to see his artwork on Final Friday in the Renfro building. Davis plans to donate proceeds from his art back to his elementary school.
His school principal called the decision touching but unsurprising.
“It’s just amazing a little kindergartner can think about that,” principal Jamie Cole said.
Final Friday ICT runs from 6-9pm on Friday, October 26. Click here for a list of locations. Davis and family will be set up in the hallway of the Renfro building at 612 E. Douglas.
