In a press conference Sunday night, Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter announced a deputy was killed in the line of duty.
Deputy Robert Kunze III died at a Wichita hospital after a shooting in rural Sedgwick County Sunday afternoon.
Kunze served with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office for 12 years. He leaves behind a wife and daughter.
The suspect involved was also killed. He was identified Monday by the sheriff’s department as Robert C. Greeson. They believe he is involved with at least three separate cases involving stolen vehicles and a stolen weapon.
The shooting happened just before 2:00 p.m. near 21st St. N. and 295th St. W. Sunday.
Sheriff Easter said Deputy Kunze was investigating a suspicious character in the area.
Kunze encountered an unknown male and discovered a weapon on the man once he patted him down. Easter said Kunze went to handcuff the suspect and a fight ensued.
Kunze was shot once and taken to a Wichita hospital where he later died. The unknown suspect was shot twice and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Although the suspect has not been identified, Sheriff Easter said he believes he was involved in several larceny cases in the area Sunday morning.
At 12:55 a.m. Wichita police got a call of a stolen car possibly taken in an aggravated robbery case. That car was found by the Cheney Police Department this evening in the 4000 block of 327th St. W.
At 9:22 this morning, a person reported a .40-caliber handgun taken from a truck in the 3300 block of W. MacArthur. A .40-caliber handgun was also found at the scene of the deadly shooting. Investigators are working to determine if it is the same gun that was stolen earlier this morning.
The sheriff said the truck the suspect was driving at the time of the shooting was also stolen from the 3800 block of W. MacArthur.
Sheriff Easter said he thinks the suspect in the shooting case is tied to these other cases.
The investigation into the shooting and in identifying the suspect in this case is ongoing.
