‘Big Float’ brings awareness to Arkansas River

A group in Wichita wanted to dispel beliefs that the Arkansas River is dirty and not a place to take a swim or float down.

As part of the first “Big Float” food trucks and other events brought people down to the river Saturday afternoon.

Organizers hope that any beliefs that the Little Arkansas River is not safe will be dispelled.

“I want Today to prove to people, that the river is this safe, accessible treasure that is here for all of us, all the time,” said Logan Paajunen.

Pajunen says the city and other government agencies have greatly improved water qualities in the river and continue to put resources into the effort.

“Big Float” is sponsored through a $6,000 grant from the Wichita Community Foundation.

In addition to the float down the river, kayaking and yoga were also available.

The event will continue until 9:00 p.m. Saturday.
