Brother of woman shot and killed in west Wichita ready for trial

Local

The woman who admitted to a reporter in a Dallas jail that she killed Laura Abarca and took her baby back in November of 2016 will be back in court Tuesday.

It’s been two years for the Abarca family, and this is what they have been waiting for .

“I bet my sister would be really happy,” says Abarca’s brother, Jose Abarca.

Baby Sophia is not so much a baby anymore. She is almost a year and a half old and loves running around in the green grass.

Back in November of 2016, her mother was shot and killed. Yesenia Sesmas allegedly killed her.

“We have been waiting long long enough so we have been ready for awhile,” says Abarca.

Tuesday is the beginning of justice for Abarca.

“I think I am going to take some time off work,” he says.

Jose helps take care of Sophia, Laura Abarca’s daughter. Sophia was six days old when her mother was shot and killed in west Wichita.

Tuesday, nearly a year and a half later, the jury will be selected for the trial. Jose says he will be there.

“It is just something that you have to be really tough to not do something crazy out there,” says Abarca.

Though Jose has come a long way since his sister died, he hasn’t forgotten the pain he felt and the joy her daughter brings to him every day.

“I just want to just see justice for my sister and want to it to be over,” explains Abarca. “I just want to go through the trial and move on with my life.”

Abarca is charged with 10 counts including first-degree murder.
