Authorities are investigating a chase and crash that involved two vehicles. It happened around 12:40 p.m. in northeast Wichita.
Wichita police said an officer was conducting a traffic stop near the 1700 block of North Minnesota when the driver fled.
“The suspect fled and the officer pursued. A short vehicle pursuit ensued. The suspect vehicle arrived at the intersection of 13th and Minnesota, he struck a Ford hatchback type vehicle,” said officer Paul Cruz, Wichita Police Department.
Some witnesses say they saw the suspect driving wildly before the crash.
“I happened to see one of the officers that was in one of the trucks following, but he didn’t have any lights on, so I’m just thinking, ‘uh oh, he’s going to pull him over.’ said Maxine Blue, witness. “Not even probably six or seven minutes later, I see the same car running through and next thing you know, I see the police officer hitting blocks with him and probably two or three minutes after that, that’s when I heard the accident.”
Blue said she heard a loud bang.
“”Oh my goodness, I thought he may have hit a pole or something,” said Blue. “I didn’t realize it was about two or three cars in the accident until I pulled up.”
Police said the suspect was taken into custody without incident. He refused medical treatment.
Police said two men in the Ford were transported to the hospital after being injured in the crash, but only suffered minor injuries.
The suspect has been booked into jail on a list of charges. Some of those include traffic and drug charges and possession of a firearm by a felon.
The intersection was closed for a short time.
