Community members gather at Newman to celebrate Zei Uwadia’s life

Local

The Wichita community came together Sunday afternoon to remember Wichita teen Zei Uwadia.

Zei was a North High student who came home last month after spending more than 450 days in a Kansas City hospital for a lung condition.

Students, friends and family gathered around her home last month to welcome her back.

Zei passed away nearly two weeks after returning home.

People met at Newman University in her honor to celebrate her life on Sunday.

“Never to give up. No matter how hard the struggle is my biggest fear is talking in front of others and so I think of Zei and think if she could do this surely I can pull this off,” said Sherri Jones, Harry Hynes Hospice.

Zei left Children’s Mercy hospital in Kansas City a day before her 17th birthday. During her hospital stay she became the first patient to walk on an invasive form of life support at the hospital.
