It’s all about the Delano District here in Wichita, and people are really excited about the project.
Tuesday, the Wichita City Council will discuss the Delano District plan and adopt a strategy to move forward on some much anticipated changes.
“There’s new approaches,” explained Scot Rigby, assistant city manger. “How do we do transportation? How do we move people around? How do we get people out of cars with pedestrian bikes and with the Q-Line? How’s that integrate with businesses of new businesses come in? What the design and feel should be of those.”
The overall goal is to evolve Delano into what the community feels the district should be, and currently city council is on the lookout for suggestions. Rigby told KSN that it’s time to give Delano its own feel. As it stands, the district has seen little to no changes over the last decade.
“Twenty years ago there was different design elements that people thought was attractive,” said Rigby. “We’ve had 20 years of development and people want to see new developments.”
City council members are aiming to bring the Delano up to speed with new accommodations that locals’ and current business owners in the area can be proud of. KSN spent a few days in the area, talking to people about the plans.
“We’ve been here for over 50 years,” said Richard Means, who owns a luggage store on Chisholm Trail. “We’ve never had a lot done until the last 10 or 13 years. Prior to that, it was pretty well left alone so this is good, just waiting to see what really does happen.”
Also waiting to see the outcome are people that live in the area. KSN spoke with a group of friends in the area about how they feel about the potential for change.
“I’m really excited that we’re improving the district,” explained local, Kassie Cabrales. “I remember what it was when I was little, and it wasn’t’t always the best place to be, but I love coming here now. So, I’m really excited to see what they do with it. It’s always been a really cool place, and I can’t wait for other people to realize it’s a cool place.”
KSN will continue to keep you updated on the plans for the Delano District.
