Disturbance resolved at El Dorado prison

Officials say a group of inmates have surrendered after starting fires inside a Kansas prison Sunday afternoon.

About 100 prisoners were involved in the disturbance at the prison in El Dorado. Kansas Department of Corrections spokesman Samir Arif says prisoners refused to leave the yard and started multiple fires inside the prison.

Arif says the prisoners “began to surrender to security staff” after about four and a half hours.

The fires that the group started were put out, and a team is examining the damage.

A wife of a correctional officer who did not want to be identified talked to KSN about her husband being called out to the incident, and says she was worried about his safety.

“I just want the relief of not wondering, you know, if something is going to kick off again, what is going on right now? I just want to know what is going on, I want to know if everyone that I love that’s out there is okay,” said the officer’s wife.

Arif says the community was never in danger during the incident and the disturbance is being investigated.
