Dodge City Police investigating theft from electrical payment dropbox

Authorities are looking for a Christmas Grinch.

The Victory Electric Co-Op Assn., Inc. came back from the holiday break to find their payment drop box was broken into Christmas evening.

According to the company’s security cameras, a man stole more than 50 people’s payments from its main drop box.

“It makes me angry,” VP of communications Jerri Whitley said. “We have those drop boxes so it’s easy for our members to drop a payment during our off hours. We’ve had the boxes for 25 years and, it’s never been a problem.”

Once the company found the broken box, Whitley said they scrolled through hours of security footage to find a medium height man with dark hair stealing the money.

The company turned the the footage over to the Dodge City Police Department the same day.

“We could tell he walked around, had some tools in his hands and walked behind the drop box and obviously did his thing and stole the payments,” she said. “It happened at 6:55 p.m.”

Whitley said anyone who dropped off their payment between December 21st through Christmas day, should call the office with the following information.

  • Name,

  • Day/time you dropped off payment

  • Vehicle description

“We want to make sure we verify everything and make sure that those members aren’t penalized or any late fees or anything like that,” she said.

KSN found one man who lost his payment, and he said the entire situation was frustrating.

As for the dropbox, the company removed the damaged box.

But there is an additional drop box with increased protection on the other side of the building that customers can still use.

However, the company is encouraging customers to use other methods to pay.

  • Mail

  • Drop box

  • Indoor drop box

  • Phone

  • Three different was to pay online

  • App

“We are evaluating whether the risk of the drop box is worth it or not,” she said. “Also if changing the locking mechanism or beefing up the metal will help.”
