RAYMOND, Kan. (KSNW) – Family members and neighbors are remembering the suspect’s father, Thomas Madden.
“It’s a tragedy this is the way Tom’s life ended,” neighbor Robert Hazlett said.
He was a friend, a community man and all around a great guy.
“Everybody knew Tom,” he said. “He was the friendliest guy and always had your back.”
Hazlett said he didn’t deserve what happened to him.
Authorities said 65-year-old Thomas was killed by his son David Madden after he allegedly shot and wounded the Rice County undersheriff. They were both found dead inside Thomas’ home early Tuesday morning.
Neighbors said the two didn’t have the best relationship but were shocked to hear the news.
“Disbelief,” Kent Loesch said. “I wish Tom wouldn’t have been home that day.”
His children shared the following statements with KSN.
“My dad was the greatest man I have ever known. He was the most loving and supportive father and grandfather. I am so proud to be Tom Madden’s daughter and his opossum (his nickname for me since birth) I am forever grateful to my dad for all his love, support, and kindness he gave me throughout my life. He will forever be loved and missed.”

“My dad, Tom Madden was the most loving and wonderful man I have ever known. He was a kind and gentle man who loved his family and grandchildren. He was always there no matter what. I have always looked up to him and went to him for advice. He was the man I wanted to become. I am proud to carry on the name of Tom Madden and the Madden legacy with my son.”

“Oh, it’s just going to be terrible missing him drive by and waving at ya,” Hazlett said.
Tom’s funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m at Hill Top Cemetery just north of Raymond.
