Filipino festival brings new flavor to Wichita

The 4th annual Filipino Festival brought family and old friends together to enjoy traditional Filipino culture.

“I moved here 10 years ago from the Philippines,” said Cora Asenero. “This is the time that all Filipinos get together.”

Asenero pointed out some traditional Filipino dishes that she makes from scratch.

“I took two days out to make all of this,” she said smiling and pointing to a  number of different foods.

From the taste of tradition to the sound of cultural music heard throughout the Philippines, Saturday’s event brought crowds of people.

“We don’t actually have anything like this, especially Filipino events,” explained Nathalie Agner. “We decided to make some special foods for this.”

Food was a very big part of today’s celebration.

“I’m in the Air Force and i’m just here to enjoy all this stuff,” said Brendan Favors. “My favorite thing is the entire pig they have over there; you can get pig feet, pig skin, pig legs – all the meat of a pig.”

Even organizers say events like this help to teach about Filipino culture and bring a sense of community.

“Next week at Century II around 5 p.m., we want to invite everyone out to another Filipino celebration,” said Director of Miss Filipino Asian Fest, Mhaeh Buan.
