A triple-A baseball team is coming to Wichita in 2020: But what will fans call them?
That’s the question at hand. For the past week, a Twitter account called Wichita Baseball 2020 has posed questions and used humor as a way to get people thinking about what to name the team.
On Thursday, one of the first focus groups formed to give input on branding the team. The Young Latino Professionals of Wichita exchanged ideas with the branding team.
“When you are allowed to be part of it and create it, that makes it more personal,” Eduardo Montemayor said.
The discussions revolved around several key questions: What is unique about Wichita? What does the future of Wichita look like?
Cecilia Thibault views Wichita as an up-and-coming smaller version of San Antonio with the development along the Arkansas river.
“Potentially something with the Keeper of the Plains or potentially something with the river, the river city,” Thibault said.
Abraham Rodriguez likes playing to the cultural traditions of Wichita and the north side neighborhoods. However, he also sees the team name to push opportunity beyond the new stadium’s walls.
“How do you draw those different people from that group and say hey this is a place where you can host, bring and invite and build a community around a venue,” Rodriguez said.
The branding team says they’ve received over 2,500 submissions.
