WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A Wichita church says an 11-year-old girl whose body was found in a lake drowned while attending a party for middle schoolers.
Shelby Cramb was found after she was reported missing from the church group. Divers found Shelby’s body in a lake Sunday afternoon near the 3200 block of North Ridge Port. Police confirm there were about one hundred kids at the party, and there was adult supervision at the party.
Emergency and fire crews found her in about 10 feet of water just a few feet off the shore.
Wichita Fire Department Interim Chief Tammy Snow says the search began several hours earlier after the child’s parents came to pick up the youth from the party.
KSN’s Craig Andres talked with Andy, Shelby’s father. Andy says he wants his little girl to be remembered as someone who loved nature.
“Loved the outdoors,” said Andy. “Loved everything outdoors. Riding her bike, animals, bugs, you name it.”
Andy says the shock has not worn off, and he appreciates the support of prayers from the church and the community.
“One of the hardest things is Gavin (Shelby’s younger brother) is struggling,” says Andy. “He’s lost his best friend. We are devastated right now. This is just so hard.”
Pathway Church said in a Facebook post that it “cannot fully express” its regret for the “horrific accident.”
The Maize School District sent a message Sunday night saying that the girl was a sixth-grader.
Andy says he often enjoyed riding bikes with his daughter, and they had gone on several long bike adventures together.
