Having a role model is important, but having a good role model is even more important. Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters has spent years matching kids with mentors who could help them succeed and thrive. Every month, KSN introduces you to this “Hopeful Little.” KSN’s Amanda Aguilar had a game night with one young man looking for someone to school him on the game of life.
“Do you want to be red or yellow?”
In the game of Connect Four, it’s all about anticipating your opponent’s next move.
“I feel like you have a strategy right now,” Amanda said.
A skill this 10-year-old has already mastered.
His name is Gabe, but you can call him “The Board Game Champion,” and I’m serious; he beat me in all the classics. Gabe obviously loves board games, but also enjoys sports, drawing, even math.
“It’s easy,” Gabe said. “It’s just grams and kilograms and meters.”
But there’s one thing he really wants to succeed at.
“I really like helping family,” Gabe said. “It would help me learn how to be big brother to my family, and it would help me realize how to have all the possibilities.”
By that he means the possibilities of getting a scholarship into college and becoming a mechanic
“I’m gonna follow him until my dreams come true,” Gabe said.
Gabe is looking for a Big Brother with common interests.
“Someone that likes to do a lot of athletic stuff,” Gabe said.
He also wants someone who isn’t afraid to sing his heart out.
“I feel like you guys would have a singing competition.”
“Oh, I would win.”
He might act shy at first, but after a while, you’ll see he’s one goofy and down-to-earth kid.
Gabe knows he has a lot to learn about life, and a Big Brother could help with that, but Gabe wants his future Big Brother to know he could teach him a thing or two as well.
