KSN has a long lasting relationship with Kansas Big Brother Big Sisters’ organization. That’s part of the reason we’re so excited to bring back our “Give a Little” segments.
A number of KSN employees are BIGS, including reporter Ashonti Ford. Ashonti was matched with her little, Keely, last summer.
“I get to have somebody else to look up to and hang out with,” said Keely.
Keely and Ashonti have done a lot of fun things together including meeting singer, Common. They even took a road trip to Cowley County to visit Kansas’ only waterfall.
“The road trip was the best because we got to go out to that waterfall and went out hiking,” explained Keely. “I’d never been anywhere like that before.”
Exploring new things together is part of what makes this sisterhood fun.
“The thing I enjoy most is showing Keely the small things that may really matter later,” explained Ashonti. “Like I showed her how to open a bank account the other day, and last week, I took her with me when I bought my new reading glasses, to show her what kinds of questions you need to ask for that kind of purchase.”
Keely and Ashonti hang out a few times a month depending on Ashonti’s busy work schedule but they both say, the time spent is worth it.
“The value to sticking to commitment is a lesson in itself,” said Ashonti. “Keely and I both value that.”
