Wheat fires investigated in southwest Kansas

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KSNW) – Authorities are investigating after hay bales and several wheat fields in southwest Kansas were started on fire on Monday.

According to Garden City police, a suspected arsonist is believed to have set the fields and bales on fire north of Garden City. Those fires were extinguished.

“All of them were located in the northern half of the county, north of Garden City. I had to do an all-call back to get personnel to the station and also had to reach out to Kearny County and Holcomb to provide units because we had exhausted all the units that we had had on scene,” said Acting Lieutenant Adam Patterson, Garden City Fire Department.

The fires were located in uncut and cut wheat fields.

“So, they were burning really hot really quickly, so we were able to get on top of them before they got really big,” said Patterson.

If you see anything or have any information regarding these fires, please call 911.
