A Hyatt Place Hotel and an expansion of Spirit AeroSystems along with other possible additions are coming to the campus of Wichita State University.
WSU announced on Thursday that hotel developers plan to build and operate a new 110-room Hyatt Place Hotel at 19th Street and Oliver on campus as part of the already expanding east side of campus.
The hotel will include a restaurant, bar, meeting space, indoor pool and fitness center.
Developers and those at the university hope the hotel will provide families of students, visiting athletic teams, event participants and other visitors a place to stay while they’re in town.
Construction will begin on the hotel in spring 2019 and will open in spring of 2020 pending an approval by the Kansas Board of Regents on Nov. 7.
“We’ve been working for a long time to bring a hotel to campus,” Tracee Friess, director of communication for research and tech transfer said. “We were previously working with the Marriott, but now we are asking the Regents for approval to work with the Hyatt.”
Spirit AeroSystems will also make a bigger impact on campus with more space for research and applied learning for students.
The university and Spirit AeroSystems announced a collaboration agreement just seven months ago but will go even bigger.
Other spaces are in the works to be developed that would allow other companies to have a presence on-campus.
