HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KSNW) – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Hutchinson. It happened around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning in the 3500 block of Ridgewood Drive in Hutchinson.
According to Hutchinson police, officers responded to the home after a “trouble with subject” call. Officers entered the home and as they were announcing their presence, they encountered a man armed with a gun in a bedroom.
“The female caller asked us to come in the home and look through the home,” said Captain Troy Hoover with the Hutchinson Police Department.
Hoover says the two officers, one with three years experience, the other with “around ten” entered the home at the woman’s request.
“As we (officers) were looking through the home, the officer encountered a white male individual in one of the back bedrooms of the residence,” says Hoover. “And at the very instant that we encountered, the officer encountered him, he had a gun pointed at both of the officers. The officers reacted immediately to defend themselves, fired their weapons at the individual.”
Police said the man, identified as 55-year-old Richard R. Jones, allegedly pointed the gun at them. Jones died after being hit multiple times by both officers.
Hutchinson police said no officers were injured.
Neighbors tell KSN officers have been called to the house multiple times recently, though they could not say what officers were responding to at those earlier events
“We had two prior 911 calls at this location from the same people involved, earlier that evening,” explained Hoover.
Both officers are now on paid, administrative leave pending the investigation now being done by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. KBI investigations are common with officer involved shootings.
