A fire broke out at the Foundation of Life Ministries Church just after 11 p.m. on Thursday in Hutchinson.
The church is located near Sherman and Poplar.
“The front is part of the church is gone, upstairs,” lifelong church member Falisha Blassingill said as she looked at the remains. “To see it burned down, it does break my heart.”
When fire crews arrived, they found the backside of the church fully involved in fire.
The fire was reported by an alert Hutchinson Police Officer patrolling in the area.
“Forty firefighters were there at the time. We even called back a ladder truck from Mcpherson for assistance,” said Jeremy Unruh, Hutchinson Fire Department Batallion Chief. “ We also used district three, which is Nickerson, South Hutch and Pretty Prairie to cover the city for us.”
Firefighters battled the flames for hours overnight.
They spent most of Friday, soaking hot spots and beginning their investigation.
“The fire is still currently under investigation. As you can see, it’s pretty much a total loss at the moment. The ATF is here since it is a church, and they will assist us in investigating,” he said.
No one was hurt in the fire.
The Electrex building suffered only minor damages next door.
Streets around Sherman are closed and are expected to be throughout the investigation.
“We will be back to investigate,” Chief Unruh said. “Today, our goal is to get into the building and tomorrow is to find the cause.”
Blassingill said the fire destroyed more than a house of worship.
“To see it’s gone.” she cried. “That’s part of family, that’s part of history.”
