Juneteenth set to elevate and educate Wichita

Have you heard of Juneteenth? For some, it's a familiar word but the organizers of this year's celebration have high hopes to create a common understanding for what Juneteenth is all about.

"June 19th is the actual day," explains Brandon Johnson, city councilman. "It's a day that celebrates the emancipation of the last slaves in Texas."

Juneteenth is also a national celebration that has rocked the nation for over 100 years, and this year, Wichita has dedicated a week to the occasion.

The event will include a hair expo, an open forum discussion on housing and education and a day dedicated to community service.

"We'll be painting a mural on 9th street," explained Johnson.

Th event kicks off on Saturday June 16th. Organizers will speak more about Juneteenth with KSN this week.
