Construction in North Wichita is set to cause a lane and ramp closure today.
The Kansas Department of Transportation is working on a project to repair the bridge decks on two eastbound K-96 bridges at the I-235/North Meridian Avenue junction.
The eastbound K-96 bridge over I-235 is reduced to a single lane until November, as KDOT crews repair each lane separately.
Crews are also closing the eastbound K-96 exit ramp to Meridian. This is expected to cause some congestion.
“This project will slow travelers down that are used to a fairly quick pass through the area, especially during that morning drive time,” said KDOT spokesman Tom Hein. “There’s going to be some congestion, so add in a little bit of extra time into your drive.”
A detour is in place for drivers. The detour will have drivers exit southbound I-235, exit at 25th Street, turn left onto 25th Street, turn left onto northbound I-235, and exit Meridian.
According to KDOT officials, the ramp closure is set to last until October as crews repair the bridges and pavement.
“It’ll be a smoother ride onto those bridges because right now — approaches, bridges, they move at different levels, and they tend to be bumping or jarring so this will fix some of that,” said Hein.
Other pavement repairs to K-96 and interchange ramps will require lane and ramp closures that have not been specifically scheduled. KDOT will alert drivers with message boards and on social media.
