Kansan Mike Pompeo is President Donald Trump’s pick for Secretary of State. President Trump tweeted Tuesday morning that he’s naming CIA director Mike Pompeo to replace Tillerson.
Those who have followed Pompeo’s career for years say he’s a good fit for the job.
“Mike’s done a great job up there as a congressman, and he’s done a great job as the CIA leader, so, I think this is the next course,” says Don McGinty, owner of McGinty Machine Company. “And I think we should be very proud of Mike and what he’s achieved and the state of Kansas should be very proud.”
McGinty machines parts for the aerospace industry. Pompeo’s Thayer aerospace company did much the same work before he sold the company a dozen years ago.
And, while McGinty says Pompeo’s work ethic is what makes him a strong candidate, he says Kansans can also count on Pompeo to keep his word in everything he does.
“I think what he says is what he means. He sticks to it even if I don’t agree with him,” says McGinty. “But in the most part ,we agree with a lot of stuff together. So, I think what Mike says, you can take to the bank.”
Former Mike Pompeo congressional campaign communications director, Sean Robinson, shares that sentiment.
“You get the same Mike Pompeo on or off camera. On or off the job. Of course, he was never off the job. He is always on,” says Robinson. “But the thing about him is he is always so consistent. His personality is consistent. His work ethic is consistent, and honestly one of the most trustworthy people I have met because of that.”
KSN asked political Jeff Jarman if the position of Secretary of State is a springboard for political leaders to higher office.
“You do want this position. The Secretary of State is a tremendously important position in our government and well respected around the world. It’s a great opportunity for Mike Pompeo,” says Jarman. “It positions him well to not just understand the issues. He had tremendous access to information as director of the CIA, but he will now build those diplomatic skills and build relationships with world leaders. It could position him for all kinds of future positions.”
